Quartz vs. Granite vs. Quartzite: Choosing the Right Kitchen Countertop
Three popular stone options with very different properties, maintenance requirements, and price points. Here is how to choose the right one for your kitchen.
The countertop conversation is one of the first decisions in any kitchen renovation, and also one of the most confusing. Quartz, granite, and quartzite look similar in photos but behave very differently in a working kitchen. Here is what you actually need to know.
Quartz: The Engineered Option
Quartz countertops are manufactured — roughly 90% ground quartz stone bound with polymer resin. The result is non-porous, scratch-resistant, and requires no sealing. Colours and patterns are consistent and predictable. The tradeoff: quartz can discolour with prolonged heat exposure and is not ideal next to an outdoor grill or wood-burning situation. For most Edmonton kitchens, quartz is the best overall choice.
Granite: The Natural Stone Classic
Granite is a natural stone with unique veining and pattern variation. It requires annual sealing to prevent staining and is more porous than quartz. It is highly heat-resistant — placing hot pans directly on granite will not damage it. If you want the organic variation of natural stone with proven durability, granite is a reliable choice.
Quartzite: The Premium Natural Option
Quartzite is natural stone (metamorphic, not manufactured) that is harder than both granite and quartz. It has the dramatic veining that homeowners love in marble without marble's vulnerability to acids and scratches. It is the most expensive of the three and requires sealing, but for show kitchens and high-end renovations, quartzite is unmatched aesthetically.
- Quartz: $65–$120/sq ft installed — best for low-maintenance, consistent look
- Granite: $55–$100/sq ft installed — best for natural variation, heat resistance
- Quartzite: $90–$160/sq ft installed — best for premium aesthetics with durability
