A kitchen island can be the best or worst addition to a kitchen depending on how it is designed. Here is how to get the size, function, and layout right.
The kitchen island is the most requested single element in kitchen renovation projects. It is also the most frequently sized incorrectly. An island that is too large for the kitchen creates a circulation problem that makes cooking and cleanup worse than before. Getting the dimensions and function right is the whole game.
The Clearance Rule
The minimum clearance between an island and adjacent countertops or walls is 42 inches for a single-cook kitchen and 48 inches for a multi-cook household. Less than this creates a pinch point that becomes frustrating very quickly, especially with open dishwasher doors, open oven doors, and multiple people moving at once. This clearance requirement dictates the maximum island size for any given kitchen.
Function Drives Form
Decide the primary purpose of the island before sizing it. Is it a prep surface? An eating bar? Additional storage? A secondary sink location? A wine storage feature? Each function has different dimensional requirements, and trying to build all functions into one island often results in a space that does none of them particularly well.
- Prep island (no seating): Minimum 24" wide × 36"–48" deep — counter height at 36"
- Island with seating overhang: Add 12"–15" to depth for knee clearance — counter height 36" or bar height 42"
- Island with sink: Requires plumbing rough-in during renovation — adds $1,500–$3,500 to project cost
- Waterfall countertop edge: Adds $800–$2,500 depending on material and cuts required
Budget Expectations
- Basic freestanding island (stock cabinetry, standard countertop): $3,500–$7,000
- Custom built-in island (custom millwork, quartz countertop): $8,000–$18,000
- Island with sink and prep appliances: $12,000–$25,000
- Note: Island cost is typically a separate line item from the main kitchen renovation budget
